The current identity (NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE) does not have write access to ‘C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files’.

I ended up having this error after the following updates were installed:

  • · Windows Server 2003 Hotfix KB971633.
  • · Windows Server 2003 Hotfix KB973346.
  • · Windows Server 2003 Hotfix KB961371.

The detailed stack trace for the error looks like:

[HttpException (0x80004005): The current identity (NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE) does not have write access to 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files'.] System.Web.HttpRuntime.SetUpCodegenDirectory(CompilationSection compilationSection) +11329385 System.Web.HttpRuntime.HostingInit(HostingEnvironmentFlags hostingFlags) +356 [HttpException (0x80004005): The current identity (NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE) does not have write access to 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files'.] System.Web.HttpRuntime.FirstRequestInit(HttpContext context) +11294470 System.Web.HttpRuntime.EnsureFirstRequestInit(HttpContext context) +88 System.Web.HttpRuntime.ProcessRequestInternal(HttpWorkerRequest wr) +11168168

The solution was to reregister ASP.NET like this:

1. Open a command prompt.
2. Navigate to 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\'
3. Run this: aspnet_regiis.exe –i

I hope this helps,

Bogdan
